LARC Project

Toward a Less Simple View of Reading

Nell K. Duke & Michael Pressley, Principal Investigators

The Simple View of Reading (Gough and Tunmer, 1986) posits that reading comprehension is a function of two components - decoding and listening comprehension. This view has been influential in reading research. In this project, LARC Principal Investigators Nell Duke and Michael Pressley, and graduate students Lauren Fingeret, Deborah Golos, Juliet Halladay, Katherine Hilden, Yonghan Park, Julia Reynolds, and Shenglan Zhang, are identifying a number of inadequacies with this view, and working to develop a more complete, accurate, and useful view of reading comprehension.
